Having a hard time keeping up on L.A. music events? Yeah, same here. But, to try and make it a little easier for people to get out and see what this city has to offer, I wrote up a list of events that I’m interested in attending this week. (I’ll for sure be at two of them, since I’ll be DJing.) Check it out and if you make it to any of the shows or parties listed below, let me know on Instagram.
Friday, September 8
Club Underground @ Grand Star Jazz Club
This Friday, September 8, is Siouxsie and the Banshees vs. Yeah Yeah Yeahs night at Club Underground with Larry G. and me, Liz O., dropping indie dance, darkwave, post-punk jams and more from 9:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. See my previous post for more information and head to Eventbrite if you want to pick up advance tickets for $8.
Grand Star Jazz Club, 943 N. Broadway, Chinatown, 90012; 9:30 p.m.; 21+; cover varies
Saturday, September 9
Celebrating Connections @ Little Tokyo/Arts District Station
Metro is celebrating the opening of the Little Tokyo/Arts District Station with a free arts and culture event on Saturday, September 9. Celebrating Connections offers neighborhood history and food tours as well as workshops and exhibitions. An eclectic mix of live performances and DJ sets will take place throughout the afternoon. This is an all ages event, so it’s the best option on this list if there are people under 21 in your group. Check the event page for full details on Celebrating Connections.
Little Tokyo/Arts Distriction Station, 402 E. 1st Street, Little Tokyo, 90012; 12:30-4:40 p.m.; all ages; free
Echo Park Rising
Echo Park Rising is a street fair/music festival that takes place mostly on an artound Sunset Blvd. Catch local bands, DJs and comedians while you peruse the neighborhoods shops, restaurants and bars. Note that some, but not all, of the events that are part of Echo Park Rising will be all ages. (Bars are still 21+) My personal picks are the line-ups over at Spacedust and Bar Henry, but there is a lot happening throughout the day and into the evening. Check out the full Echo Park Rising schedule for venue addresses and set times.
L.A. Industrial @ On Maritime Records
If you’re in Highland Park and looking for an afternoon hang, head to On Maritime Records, where L.A. Industrial will be in-store from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. with DJs playing acid house, new beat and EBM jams. This is also your chance to win tickets for Cold Waves L.A. on September 28, as there will be a raffle with the $5 tickets benefiting SofaBurnInc.
On Maritime Records, 5506 Monte Vista Street, Highland Park, 90042; 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.; all ages; free
Take It Outside with Gerd Janson, Tottie, Spiñorita, Masha Mar & Heidi Lawden (B2B) @ La Plaza de Culturas y Artes
With a sound at the intersection of disco and house, Gerd Janson’s remixes are favorites of mine (check out his take on Rheinzand’s track “Blind”), which makes this Take It Outside event quite intriguing. I’d arrive early enough to catch Masha Mar and Heidi Lawden’s B2B set. As of the time of this post, regular price tickets are over $40, but, there are $20 tickets available for those planning to arrive before 6 p.m. Tickets are available through Resident Advisor.
La Plaza de Culturas y Artes, 501 N. Main St., Los Angeles, 90012; 5 p.m.- midnight; 21+; cover varies
Décadanse Soirée @ Grand Star Jazz Club
DJs Pierrot and Fifi Laroux cover decades of French pop on vinyl on second Saturdays for Décadanse. Head over to Grand Star Jazz Club on Saturday night to see what they pull from their crates this month. RSVP on Instagram for discounted entry.
Grand Star Jazz Club, 943 N. Broadway, Chinatown, 90012; 9:30 p.m.; 21+; cover varies
Monday, September 11
Maraschino, Jack Kilmer, Raspberry Blonde, DJ Chris Coady @ Zebulon
Last March, Maraschino released a fantastic synthpop album, Hollywood Piano, a couple tracks from which have made it into my DJ sets. (You can read more about Hollywood Piano in my previous post about the album.) Monday’s show at Zebulon will be a great opportunity to hear her music live, particularly if your budget for shows is smaller than usual right now. There’s no cover for this night at Zebulon.
Zebulon, 2478 Fletcher Drive, Los Angeles, 90039; 8 p.m.; 21+; no cover
Tuesday, September 12
Dolce Vita @ The Mermaid
I’m back at The Mermaid on September 12 for L.A. Industrial’s Italo disco party, Dolce Vita. Catch me playing from 9 p.m. until last call while enjoying a cocktail or two this Tuesday night.

Harvard & Stone, 5221 Hollywood Blvd., 90027; 8 p.m.; 21+; no cover
Thursday, September 14
lovetempo, Great Vacation, Turbotito (DJ set) @ Gold Diggers
lovetempo is the latest project from Mattie Safer (The Rapture, Poolside) and you may have heard a couple tracks from lovetempo in my DJ sets over the course of the past few months. If you like to dance when you’re at shows, this night at Gold Diggers should be a treat.
Gold Diggers, 5632 Santa Monica Blvd., 90038; 7 p.m.; 21+; $13.23 on Dice.
Check out Los Angeles-based DJ Liz O. at one of her upcoming gigs.
