You have two chances to catch me in the DJ booth this week. First up is Club Underground’s Bowie Nite this Friday, January 12, at Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown. Underground is taking over both floors of the Grand Star this week, with Larry G. playing open to close on the main floor and me, Liz O., doing the same on the second floor. Discounted tickets are available now via either Dice and Eventbrite. 

The Grand Star is located at 943 N. Broadway, Los Angeles 90012. It’s inside Chinatown’s Central Plaza, right next to the Bruce Lee statue. Both street and lot parking is available in the neighborhood. The venue is also right across Broadway from Metro’s A Line station in Chinatown. Party starts at 9:30 p.m. and it is a 21+ event. 

On Tuesday, January 16, you’ll find me at The Mermaid loaded up with Italo disco jams for L.A. Industrial’s weekly party, Dolce Vita. There’s no cover and it’s 21+, so stop by with your pals for some tasty cocktails and a soundtrack filled with tunes by the likes of Fancy, Fun Fun, Ken Laszlo, Sabrina and more. 

The Mermaid is located at 428 E. 2nd Street in Little Tokyo. There’s typically loads of free parking available after 9 p.m., which is the same time that Dolce Vita starts. The bar is also a (very) short walk from Metro’s A/E line stop in Little Tokyo.

Thursday, January 11

Georges Méliès Short Film Program + Live Score By Environmental Studies @ Philosophical Research Society

This Thursday night, Philosophical Research Society will screen three shorts from the pioneering filmmaker George Méliès with contemporary, musical accompaniment. Check out “Kingdom of the Fairies” (1903), “The Inventor Crazybrains and His Wonderful Airship” (1906) and “The Impossible Voyage” (1904) presented with a live score from local group Environmental Studies. Arrive early to catch a DJ set from Yaravan. Tickets are available now on Eventbrite.

Plaid Pre-Party @ On Maritime Records

If you want to win a ticket to see Plaid at the Lodge Room on Friday, January 19, head to On Maritime Records this Saturday at 5 p.m. This pre-party event will include a DJ set from The Secret Lives of Cats as well as a raffle for the Plaid ticket giveaway. This is a free event.

Razorcake Hearts @ Footsies 

DJs Juan 38, Joe Dana and Sharon Like will be spinning all-vinyl sets at Footsies on Saturday from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Happy Hour runs from 5 until 8 p.m. Plus, there will be copies of the new issue of Razorcake on hand, as well as t-shirts for sale. Purchase of a t-shirt will get you a beer too. No cover. 21+

Sunday, January 14

Riddim n Brews @ Creature Comforts

Head to the Fashion District on Sunday afternoon for The Boss Sound’s monthly celebration of vintage Jamaican tunes on vinyl. Deejay Double Plus (NOLA) and Eric Mauries (Black Bird Records/Steady 45s) join resident Ted Morris for this all-ages event at Creature Comforts. The party runs from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. and rideshares are recommended. There is street and lot parking available, but The Boss Sound notes on Instagram that some paid lots close early. No cover.

House Heads feat. Todd Terry @ Sound

Back when I was doing ‘90s House Party at The Lash, a significant chunk of the tunes I played were either made or remixed by Todd Terry. He’s a legend who still consistently drops bangers. That tickets for this event at Sound are only $17 on Dice right now should be some incentive to get out on a Sunday night and hit the dance floor.
