I made an executive decision to scale back on the event listings here, just to save myself some time. Going forward, I’ll post these on Thursdays and the list will include my top five recommendations for events happening in L.A. through Wednesday of the following week.
The top 5 will be in addition to my DJ gigs. (I’m not playing anywhere this week.) If an event is going on multiple days, like a week-long movie run, it will be listed at the top. After that, everything is listed chronologically.
This week’s recommendations include David Lynch movies screening in L.A. and Orange County. Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire or David Lynch: The Art Life? Take your pick. There’s also animation studio Titmouse’s annual 5 Second Day shorts fest over Vidiots on Friday night. For shows, Agender’s free, album release gig at Zebulon will be a blast on Friday. On Saturday, consider Franz Ferdinand at The Wiltern or Vague Lanes and Darkswoon at The Goldfish. All the details are listed below.
Thursday, March 27 – Wednesday, April 2
David Lynch Movie Screenings
For David Lynch fans looking to catch his films in an actual movie theater, this week’s options include Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire.
Lost Highway finishes its run at Alamo Drafthouse on Thursday with three screenings, all of which still have tickets available at the time of writing this post. On Friday, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire will begin their runs at the downtown movie theater. Some of those screenings are already sold out and others have very few tickets left. However, there are a lot of showtimes available. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to go to the movies, discount tickets are available for Tuesday screenings of both movies. Alamo Drafthouse, 700 W. 7th St., Suite U240, DTLA 90017; Get tickets
Westsiders, you can catch Mulholland Drive on Friday night at The Nuart. The film screens at 10:30 p.m. and it looks like there’s a decent amount of tickets available. Meanwhile, people in Orange County can head to The Frida, where the film is playing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Nuart, 11272 Santa Monica Blvd., West L.A. 90025; 10:30 p.m.; Get tickets The Frida Cinema, 305 E. 4th Street, Suite 100, Santa Ana 92701; Multiple dates, times; Get tickets
A bonus for those in the Pasadena area: 2016 documentary David Lynch: The Art Life will screen at Landmark Pasadena Playhouse on Tuesday, April 1. Landmark Pasadena Playhouse, 673 E. Colorado, Pasadena 91101; April 1, 7 p.m.; Get tickets

Titmouse’s 5 Second Day…Night! @ Vidiots
Titmouse, the animation studio known for Metalocalypse, The Venture Brothers, Midnight Gospel and loads of other shows, has an annual event called 5 Second Day, where staffers get to make their own shorts, which are then screened publicly. Years ago, I wrote about the event for L.A. Weekly and am excited to see that it’s still happening. If you’re into animation, do check it out. The 5 Second Day shorts are a lot of fun. There are two screenings happening at Vidiots on Friday, one at 7 p.m. and another at 9 p.m. Vidiots, 4884 Eagle Rock Blvd., Eagle Rock 90041; multiple times; Get tickets
Agender, Muscle Beach, DJ Allison Wolfe @ Zebulon
Agender, the L.A. punk band, released a terrific new album, Berserk, earlier this month and the release party is happening Friday night at Zebulon, with support from Muscle Beach and a DJ set from Bratmobile’s Allison Wolfe. This is an early show, Agender is anticipated to go on at around 9 p.m., and it’s free. Can’t go wrong with that. Zebulon, 2478 Fletcher Dr., Elysian Valley 90039; 7 p.m.; RSVP

Franz Ferdinand, Telescreens @ The Wiltern
If you haven’t seen Franz Ferdinand before, a worthwhile splurge would be to get one of the few non-resale tickets left for the band’s concert at The Wiltern on Saturday night. Franz Ferdinand is fantastic live and The Human Fear, which came out in January, is a wonderful album. Telescreens opens the show, which is all ages. The Wiltern, 3790 Wilshire Blvd., Koreatown 90010; 7 p.m.; Get tickets

Vague Lanes, Darkswoon, DJs Zlaya, Jose Shuton and Industria Nova @ The Goldfish
If you’re vibe is more post-punk and darkwave, head to The Goldfish on Saturday night. Vague Lanes, the Bay Area duo of Mike Cadoo (Gridlock, Bitcrush) and Badger McInnes (Here We Burn, After the Apex), are in town along with Portland shoegaze/dreampop outfit Darkswoon. On the decks are DJs Zlaya, Jose Shuton and Industria Nova. The show is 21+ and the cover is under $15 on Dice. The Goldfish, 5043 York Blvd., Highland Park 90042; 8 p.m.; Get tickets
