On Thursday, May 23, I’ll be playing tunes at Harvard and Stone for the Family of Light, Host Family and the Rose Haze show, presented by The Witching Hours. This is one of those events where I highly recommend early arrival because you won’t want to miss any of the artist’s on the bill. It’s the sort of line up I love, where all the bands have a different, but complementary, sounds.
Psych band Family of Light released their most recent EP, Arm’s Length, last fall. It’s a fantastic collection of songs with a vibe that’s late 1960s-via-early 1990s Creation Records. (Check out the video for the EP’s title track on YouTube too.) Also, a recent post from the band on Instagram notes that they’ll have vinyl for the show.
Local indie band Host Family, who opened for Bar Italia at the Fonda last month, digs into the ‘90s college radio sound— think Sonic Youth and Swervedriver— on their recent two-song EP “Two Months, Next Year/Splinter.”
From the Bay Area, the Rose Haze sounds exactly like their band name and I’m certain there’s no better way to describe the music than rose haze. Start listening with the phenomenal cover of “Heaven or Las Vegas.” I don’t use the word “phenomenal” lightly either. Cocteau Twins songs aren’t the easiest to cover.
I’ll be playing music in between the bands and post-show. Tickets are available now on Dice for this 21+ event. Harvard and Stone is located at 5221 Hollywood Blvd. and the night begins at 8 p.m. See you on May 23.
