It’s David Bowie’s birthday, which means that Friday night, January 10, will be Club Underground’s annual Bowie night. Both floors of the Grand Star will be open so ready for some sound and vision with Larry G. and me in the DJ booths and Miho ready to make you up like Aladdin Sane. Underground’s Bowie Nights do sell out, so click on this link to get your tickets asap.
On Saturday, Klub Nocturno is throwing its annual Cheap AF party. This is a full takeover of Catch One, so you’ll get five rooms for one extremely low price. Rock en Español vs. Cumbia! New Wave vs. Darkwave! Deftones Night! Old School vs. New School Reggaeton! Disco! Click on this link and your tickets now before this one sells outs.
Speaking of cheap nights out on the town, Mexican synthpop outfit Valgur is playing Alex’s Bar on Sunday, January 12, and the ticket is under $15, with fees included. Monday night’s Hot Load residency show at Zebulon, which includes sets from La Pregunta and DJ Soltera, doesn’t have a cover, but they will be taking donations for Chicas Rockeras at the door.
As for movies, I don’t want to assume that everyone has seen A Clockwork Orange, so, if you haven’t, you can change that this week. Kubrick’s classic film, long a reference for alt music types (e.g. Heaven 17, Moloko), is screening in L.A. at Alamo Drafthouse and in Orange County at The Frida. A more recent weirdo film fave— and by “weirdo film fave,” I mean something I own on DVD— is Satoshi Kon’s wild, animated feature, Paprika. The movie, is celebrating its 15th anniversary with 4K screenings at various AMCs in the greater L.A. area.
