This Saturday, I’ll be DJing at Klub Nocturno’s massive, multi-room bash at Catch One. The RSVP list has already filled up and if you’re on it, be sure to arrive early because entry is first-come-first-serve. See Klub Nocturno’s post on Instagram for more details. I’ll be playing in the New Wave vs. Dark Wave room and can’t wait to see those of you who are going on the dance floor.
As for the rest of the week, here’s what’s happening. I’m keeping this brief on account of not having much time to write this week.
Disco Matinee returns to the first Sunday of the month at Grand Star Jazz Club on Sunday, February 4. Join resident DJs. Liz O. and Jus’ B, alongside special guest DJ Jen Rock from 3-7 p.m. We’ll be celebrating Jen’s birthday with an afternoon mix of disco, funk, freestyle, plus a dash of Italo and nu-disco. If your jam is a mix of Donna Summer, Taana Gardner, Lime, Daft Punk and Purple Disco Machine, head on down to Disco Matinee.
Drop us a line to RSVP for $5 entry before 4 p.m. Entry without an RSVP, or after 4 p.m., is $8.
The Grand Star is located at 943 N. Broadway, inside Chinatown’s Central Plaza, right next to the Bruce Lee statue. There is both street and lot parking in the neighborhood. The venue is also located across Broadway from Metro’s A line stop in Chinatown.
You have two chances to catch me in the DJ booth this week. First up is Club Underground’s Bowie Nite this Friday, January 12, at Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown. Underground is taking over both floors of the Grand Star this week, with Larry G. playing open to close on the main floor and me, Liz O., doing the same on the second floor. Discounted tickets are available now via either Dice and Eventbrite.
The Grand Star is located at 943 N. Broadway, Los Angeles 90012. It’s inside Chinatown’s Central Plaza, right next to the Bruce Lee statue. Both street and lot parking is available in the neighborhood. The venue is also right across Broadway from Metro’s A Line station in Chinatown. Party starts at 9:30 p.m. and it is a 21+ event.
On Tuesday, January 16, you’ll find me at The Mermaid loaded up with Italo disco jams for L.A. Industrial’s weekly party, Dolce Vita. There’s no cover and it’s 21+, so stop by with your pals for some tasty cocktails and a soundtrack filled with tunes by the likes of Fancy, Fun Fun, Ken Laszlo, Sabrina and more.
The Mermaid is located at 428 E. 2nd Street in Little Tokyo. There’s typically loads of free parking available after 9 p.m., which is the same time that Dolce Vita starts. The bar is also a (very) short walk from Metro’s A/E line stop in Little Tokyo.
We’re not doing Disco Matinee this month (stay tuned for details regarding our party in February), so I have a week off from club gigs. However, you can catch me on Dublab this Thursday, January 4, where I’ll be Moniquea’s guest on her show “Jammin’ Croquettes.” I’m really excited to start off 2024 playing alongside Moniquea, whose taste in music is impeccable, so make sure to tune in between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. As for IRL L.A. music events this week, I have a few recommendations listed below.
Club Underground‘s New Year’s Eve Ball is ready to drop this Sunday, December 31 at Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown. I’ll be DJing alongside Larry G. and Malvada as we takeover both floors of the venue from 9:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. Tickets for the party, which is a NYE event pick in Southern California News Group papers, are going fast online, so get yours as soon as possible via Dice or Eventbrite. Last year’s event sold out, so don’t wait until the last minute for this. This is a 21+ event.
I don’t have any club gigs this week, but you can catch me on Sunday, December 17 in “The Conversation” with Mike Regalado at 8 p.m. on Boyle Heights radio station KQBH. It’s a talk show about music, so tune into 101.5 FM if you’re in Boyle Heights or listen online outside of the neighborhood to find out what we discuss. As for actual L.A. music events, I have some suggestions for those of you who aren’t heading to Crypto.com Arena (ugh, can they change that stupid name soon?) to see Depeche Mode this weekend. Keep reading for more info.
This week, you can catch me playing a few records at Vidéothèque’s Opening Party on Saturday evening, sometime between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Plus, I’ll be at The Mermaid on Tuesday, October 24 to drop an even spookier Italo Horror Disco set than the one I played earlier this month. But, there’s still a lot more than that happening in the next handful of days. Keep reading to see what my L.A. music event recommendations are for this week.
This weekend, you can find me at the Grand Star in Chinatown, where I’ll be playing on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Aside from that, there are some very cool events happening around town, amongst them, you’ll find techno at the Lodge Room, Italo at Moroccan Lounge, Japanese pop at High Tide and more. Check out the list of L.A. music events below for information on my own gigs, plus my recommendations for this week.
This is an updated post. Originally, I said that I wasn’t DJing this week. As it turns out, I’ll be at The Mermaid on Tuesday night for Dolce Vita, so scroll down for the details. Otherwise, here’s what’s on my list of L.A. music events for the next week. The list might be updated later if I find out about some more events happening during the week.
One note about these event lists is that I try to make sure that they’re more-or-less affordable, so I’ve been using $30 as the cap on ticket prices and always try to include some free events. Three on this list have no cover.
Disco Matinee returns to Grand Star Jazz Club on Sunday, October 8 from 3 to 7 p.m. Special guest DJ Mr. Michel (Dolce Vita, Playback Fantasy, Æomega Lab Moda L.A.) joins resident DJs Liz O. and Jus’ B for an afternoon of disco classics mixed with Italo disco, hiNRG, freestyle, nu-disco and lots more. Stop by if you’re game to dance to anything from Donna Summer to Taana Gardner to Lime to Daft Punk to Purple Disco Machine.
