This Friday, I’m back at Club Underground with Larry G. for Yeah Yeah Yeahs x Siouxsie Nite. Both floors of Grand Star Jazz Club will be open and tickets are available now. Party starts at 9:30 p.m. and it’s 21+. Find the Grand Star at 943 N. Broadway inside Chinatown’s Central Plaza next to the Bruce Lee statue.
As for the rest of the weekend and into next week, your options include Pearl and the Oysters’s free show at Levitt Pavilion on Saturday. Also happening Saturday is Razorcake’s annual chili cook-off at Footsies and Décadanse’s tribute to Francoise Hardy at the Grand Star. On Monday, Ed Harcourt is playing at The Stowaway, which is a very intimate venue. Tuesday night, my favorite Schwarzenegger movie, The Running Man, screens at Vidiots in Eagle Rock. There’s plenty more happening in L.A. too. Check out the list below.
This is going to be a whirlwind of a weekend. I’m playing four gigs in the next seven days and hope to see a few you out at least one of them. Friday night is Decadanse x Underground at Grand Star Jazz Club with Larry G. and me playing all your Underground favorites and Decadanse DJs Pierrot and Fifi LaRoux bring French heat to the dance floor. Tickets are available through Eventbrite or Dice.
On Saturday, I’ll be playing records for Malvada’s party at Bigfoot Lodge in Los Feliz with DJ Felix. Sunday is the first anniversary party for Disco Matinee over at Grand Star and Tuesday I’ll be joining David Christian for Dolce Vita’s ‘80s night Splash over at The Mermaid. Liquid Sky plays at Gardena Cinema on Friday night.
It’s a good week for movies in L.A. You’ve got two nights of Bruce LaBruce screenings at 2220 Arts + Archives, The Living End (with Gregg Araki in the house) at Academy Museum on Thursday and, one of my personal favorites, Liquid Sky at Gardena Cinema on Friday.
Also on Friday, Vidiots is screening Out of the Blue, the 1980 Dennis Hopper starring Linda Manz as a troubled punk rock teen. The movie is the source of the “Kill All Hippies” sample in the Primal Scream song of the same name. And, not to spoil anything, but it has one of the most disturbing endings I’ve ever seen in a movie. You’ve been warned.
There are also some worthwhile shows happening on the lower side of the ticket price spectrum, including Hunx & His Punx at Lodge Room next Wednesday night. At the time of writing this, tickets were still available for that show. As always, there are loads of DJ nights happening— certainly more than I’ve been able to keep track of on socials this week— so take some time to check out those if you can too. Keep reading to see what’s happening in L.A. between June 27 and July 3.
(And, in case you were wondering, my next gig is Friday, July 5 at Grand Star Jazz Club for Décadanse x Underground. Click on this link for more details.)
A reminder outside The Echo that Dum Dum Fest with Taleen Kali, Sacred Skin, Dildox and more is Saturday at The Echo
No DJ gigs for me this week, but there are a ton of events happening in L.A. In fact, so much is going on that it took a good while to narrow down this list of concerts, DJ events and movie screenings for you. Which band do you check out on Friday night? IDK, but I have seen Melt-Banana twice and they slay. Should your Saturday night movie be The Legend of the Stardust Brothers or Liquid Sky? (That’s a tough call, friends.) Is it best to head to Alamo Drafthouse on Tuesday or Wednesday for Deep Red? (I would say go Tuesday, then head to Little Tokyo for Dolce Vita’s new ‘80s night, Splash, after that.)
Since life is still really expensive, I only picked events that had at least one ticket available for under $30 before fees at the time of posting this. For all I know, it may be just one ticket in some cases, so don’t blame me if you can’t find anything but $100 resale floor tickets for Twin Tribes or whatever. But, just in case you didn’t know, even the Doobie Brothers have some cheap seats available for their show at The Forum on Sunday. Keep reading for more of what’s happening in L.A.
This weekend is going to be amazing. Friday night is Pulp Nite at Club Underground. I’ll be playing alongside Larry G. at Grand Star Jazz Club, where both floors of the venue will be open. There will your favorite Pulp jams and deep cuts, plus so much more. Tickets are available now on Eventbrite and Dice, so pick up one for yourself or a few for your crew and dance with us at the Grand Star on Friday night.
This Friday is 2000s Nite at Underground and I’ll be playing the jams from Peaches, Interpol, Ladytron and more for you at Chinatown’s Grand Star Jazz Club. Tickets are available on both Eventbrite and Dice, so pick up yours now.
Then on Sunday, I’ll be back at the Grand Star for Disco Matinee. Jus’ B and I will be playing disco, funk, dance-punk and more from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. You can get tickets now on Restless Nites.
As for the rest of the weekend and early next week, I have some recommendations for you listed here.
Just doing a quick update this week with a smattering of events happening in L.A. over Memorial Day Weekend and into next week. Thursday night, I’ll be playing tunes at Harvard & Stone alongside live performances from Family of Light, Host Family and the Rose Haze. Check out my previous post for more information on the bands playing. This is going to be a very fun night and I hope to see you there. Tickets are available now on Dice. Harvard & Stone is located at 5221 Hollywood Blvd and this is a 21+ event.
Thank God It’s Friday is screening on Friday at WHAMMY! in Echo Park
I hate writing “there’s a lot going on L.A. right now,” but, damn, this city is overflowing with things to do right now. I narrowed it down a lot. As a general rule of thumb, I don’t include the corporate festivals because I figure that your timeline, like mine, is already overrun with ads for them.
I also try to keep this list specifically for lower priced shows, so I didn’t add Kraftwerk’s nine-night stint at Walt Disney Concert Hall to the list. However, I will say that I’ve seen Kraftwerk twice and they are amazing live. That said, if you can splurge on the tickets, then do it. (And tell me all about it because I’m not going this time around.)
My next club gig isn’t until next Thursday, where I’ll be DJing at Harvard and Stone for the Family of Light, Host Family, the Rose Haze show presented by The Witching Hours. Click on this post for more information, including how you can get tickets. In the meantime, keep scrolling for info on what’s happening between tonight and next Wednesday.
On Thursday, May 23, I’ll be playing tunes at Harvard and Stone for the Family of Light, Host Family and the Rose Haze show, presented by The Witching Hours. This is one of those events where I highly recommend early arrival because you won’t want to miss any of the artist’s on the bill. It’s the sort of line up I love, where all the bands have a different, but complementary, sounds.
