This Friday, April 11, I’ll be back at Catch One for Klub Nocturno. Find me in the Boy Harsher Night room, playing darkwave and new wave for you. (And, obviously, expect to hear a lot of Boy Harsher in the set.) As of the time of writing this, there are still tickets available, so click this link and get yours asap. This is a full venue takeover, so there are five rooms to explore all for one cover charge. Party starts at 9:30 p.m. This is a 21+ event.
As for the rest of the weekend, Saturday is jam-packed with events taking you from day to night. So, even if you didn’t get tickets to see Ultra Sunn at 1720, which is sold out now, there’s still a lot to do.
Salt Box Records, which reopened in Little Tokyo a few weeks ago is holding its Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, April 12 from noon until 8 p.m. Salt Box is a fantastic shop, which I previously wrote about here, and I recommend checking it out if you’re into city pop, boogie and other synth-heavy ‘80s sounds. The Grand Opening lineup is killer with DJ sets from Salt Box proprietor XL Middleton, as well as Moniquea, Kaistar, DSR Chris, David Zylberman and Spence. Zackey Force Funk is playing live and L.A. electro legend Egyptian Lover will be on hand for a DJ set and to sign copies of his new album, 1987. Salt Box is at 320 E. 2nd St., 2nd Floor (inside Hello Stranger) in Little Tokyo. FYI, if you’re going to the Bernie Sanders event at Grand Park on Saturday, you’ll be walking distance from Salt Box.
If you like chili served with a side of punk rock, head to Footsie’s for Razorcake’s annual Chili Cook Off on Saturday, April 12, between 5 and 10 p.m. There’s no cover, but it’s $10 if you want to eat. There are 12 chilis in competition this year, half vegan/veggie and half with meat. This is a 21+ event and Footsie’s is located at 2640 N. Figueroa St. in Cypress Park. Head over to Eventbrite for more information.
Saturday night is Décadanse Soirée over at Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown. DJs Pierrot and Fifi Laroux spin all French pop on vinyl all night. This is one of my favorite parties in L.A. and I highly recommend checking our Décadanse if you’ve never been. RSVP via Partiful for discounted entry. The address is 943 N. Broadway in Chinatown’s Central Plaza, next to the Bruce Lee statue and Décadanse is on the first floor of the venue.
For the goth crowd, upstairs at the Grand Star on Saturday night is Club Disintegration with DJ perksandkisses playing the dark jams, all night. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.
Sunday is the annual Bob Baker Day event, celebrating the life of the late puppeteer, at L.A. State Historic Park. The Bob Baker Marionette Theater is a Los Angeles institution that has welcomed generations of of kids for birthday parties and field trips. There will be puppet shows throughout the day, as well as live music and other entertainment. If you have kids, this is a great Sunday excursion. It’s free, but you will have to RSVP, and the park is located right next to the A Line stop in Chinatown. Head over to the Bob Baker Day website for more information.
On Sunday night, there’s a free show happening at Slipper Clutch with Calvin Lee, Band Aparte, Acid Train and Hearsay, plus DJ Azeka Aurat. The show starts at 8 p.m. and I recommend getting there early because this is a very solid lineup. Slipper Clutch is 21+ and located at 351 S. Broadway in beautiful DTLA. It’s in the back of the Grayson.
