L.A. Zine Fest, Mr. Black, Deftones and More Happening in L.A. From February 27 – March 5

The Adventures of Prince Achmed Lotte Reiniger
Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 animated feature The Adventures of Prince Achmed screens at PRS on Saturday, March 1 with live score by Elf Freedom

Love zines? This weekend, L.A. Zine fest takes over The Broad. You can learn how to DIY print media or just see what’s available to read in the super-indie press at the afternoon-long event, which is free to attend on both Saturday and Sunday.

At the cusp of the ‘00s and ‘10s, Mr. Black was the place to be on Tuesday nights. The soiree returns for one night only on Saturday, March 1 at Bardot in Hollywood. Also on Saturday night, Lotte Reiniger’s nearly century-old animated feature The Adventures of Prince Achmed screens at Philosophical Research Society with a live score from Elf Freedom.

While I don’t typically post about the stadium concerts, it seemed worthwhile to note that, at the time of writing this, there were still a few tickets left for Deftones and The Mars Volta at the Forum on Wednesday, March 5.

Scroll down for details on these and more events happening in L.A. between Thursday, February 27 through Wednesday March 5.

Thursday, February 27

Upsilon Acrux, Corima, Peter Kolovos @ 2220 Arts + Archives In the ‘00s, Upsilon Acrux was one of those bands that played *a lot* around Los Angeles. After a seven-year absence from the live stage, guitarist Paul Lai brings back the instrumental project at 2220 Arts + Archives on Thursday night. Also playing are Corima and Peter Kolovos.  2220 Arts + Archives, 2220 Beverly Blvd., Historic Filipinotown 90057; 8 p.m.; 21+; Get tickets

Damaged Disco w/Lost Tapes, Magic Wands, Apology Kink @ Gold-Diggers This week, Damaged Disco has a killer lineup headlined by Lost Tapes, the project of musician and producer Shok, who has worked David J & Daniel Ash, Neil Davidge (Massive Attack), Douglas McCarthy, CrowJane, Jane Jensen and more. His 2024 single, “Fall,” is a fantastic darkwave track, as is his cover of the ‘80s club jam “Sex Beat.”  Magic Wands, whose singer Dexy V. also provided backing vocals on the “Sex Beat” cover, is also playing Damaged Disco on Thursday and Apology Kink opens the show. Dat68 will be in the DJ booth.  Gold-Diggers, 5632 Santa Monica Blvd., East Hollywood 90038; 7 p.m.; 21+; Get tickets

Busy P, Loods @ Sound. French Touch freaks and indie sleazoids, get ready because Ed Banger founder Busy P headlines Sound on Friday, February 28. Back in the day, Busy P managed Daft Punk and launched the label that popularized artists like Justice, Uffie and SebastiAn. Not only that, but the tickets are surprisingly reasonable, priced at a little under $30 on Dice, so many don’t pass up this chance to catch the DJ/labelhead who is so deeply intertwined with the club sound of the late ‘00s.  Sound, 1642 N. Las Palmas Ave., Hollywood 90028; 10 p.m.; 21+; Get tickets

The Love Witch @ The Nuart TBH, I think of the 2010s as a mostly forgettable era for alt culture, but one of the standouts was The Love Witch. Anna Biller’s 2016 hyper-stylized occult horror film that’s also a sly feminist satire of relationships and self-help culture. If you’ve never seen it— or even if it’s one of your streaming favorites— catch it on the big screen at The Nuart this Friday night.  The Nuart, 11272 Santa Monica Blvd., West L.A. 90025; 10:30 p.m.; Get tickets

Mr. Black @ Bardot Back in the late ‘00s, Mr. Black at Bardot was the place to be on Tuesday nights. (Not kidding, I covered the 2009 grand opening for L.A. Weekly and, while the story is lost somewhere in the 404, I still remember it being a total scene.) The Picture of Dorian Gray @ Los Feliz Theatre The 1945 film adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s novel appears at Los Feliz Theatre for an 80th anniversary screening on Sunday night. Now, I only recently saw this version for the first time and regret having taken so long to get around to watching the classic. Angela Lansbury plays doomed actress Sybil Vane. The aged painting of Dorian Gray is super creepy.  It’s wonderful. Los Feliz Theater, 1822 N. Vermont Ave., Los Feliz 90037; 1 p.m.; Get tickets

Cinematic Void Presents: Beyond the Black Rainbow @ Los Feliz Theater On Monday, March 3, cult movie screening series Cinematic Void presents presents Beyond the Black Rainbow. The 2010 debut feature of director Panos Cosmatos, who later directed Mandy, is wild new age horror film that helped usher in the decade’s synthwave vibe and was likely a visual influence on more than a few pop culture phenomena to follow.  Los Feliz Theater, 1822 N.
