My friend Michelle, aka ChubbyBunny of Bubblepunch, asked me to DJ at Meltdown Comics for Suicide Girls’ pre-Comic-Con party. Of course, I said yes. This was different from most gigs in that I would be playing for four hours straight and had to bring my own gear. (For club gigs, the gear is there.)

I’m exceptionally grateful to have a boyfriend who also knows how to DJ and actually has a background in sound stuff and was willing to help me out with the gig. We loaded up two turntables, a mixer, a monitor, two crates of vinyl and assorted odds and ends. We set up in record time, giving us enough of a break in the schedule to grab dinner with Michelle at a restaurant where they had crayons on the table. I drew the little guy in the photo above. He’s some sort of weird hybrid of Fido Dido and Robert Smith that started popping up on my binder in 6th grade.

I played for four hours. Carlos gave me a couple song-length breaks (indicated by * in the set list). He also let me borrow some of his nerdiest records for the set, including The Timelords and Meco. It was a really fun night, not a dancing party but a good chance for me to practice the marathon sets. I haven’t done those in years.
